"It's about two forms of emancipation: the emancipation of smaller languages and the emancipation of women."

"It's about two forms of emancipation: the emancipation of smaller languages and the emancipation of women."

This Erasmus+ project aimed to spread the use of Wikipedia in minority language areas in Europe as a tool for teaching digital literacy, social engagement, and language skills.

Why WikiWomen?

Women are still underrepresented on Wikipedia, as well as in libraries, archives, and history books. This imbalance reflects larger societal issues, but it doesn’t have to stay this way. Through our project, we empowered students in minority language communities to bring more women’s stories to life on Wikipedia.

By addressing gender equality and exploring the structural reasons behind these imbalances, students contributed to a more inclusive digital world while strengthening their digital and research skills—and their confidence in using their minority language.

Wikipedia: A Tool for Learning

The digital world gives us access to staggering amounts of information, but navigating it requires essential skills: verifying sources, finding trustworthy information, and uncovering relevant details that might not yet exist online.

Writing articles on Wikipedia gave students a unique way to build these skills. They combined online and offline research, learned how to share reliable content, and experienced the impact of publishing work that helps others.

Preserving Minority Languages

Wikipedia is more than a place to learn—it’s a platform for preserving and promoting minority languages. Making these languages relevant in the digital age is key to their survival. By contributing to Wikipedia, students ensured their minority languages were represented and future generations could connect with them.

This project proved that open-source platforms like Wikipedia can create real change. For example, the Welsh Wikipedia has achieved gender parity in its biographies—a milestone for representation.
